After years of showing vague interest, I finally sat down and decided I wanted to learn to sew in college, and got my mom to help me get started. She gave me an old Kenmore sewing machine that I’m sure is older than I am, showed me the basics of how to make it work and how to read patterns, and I was off. I made some clothes, but found I really enjoyed making bags and other things I could gift to people.
The Lime Green Sewing Room started as a way for me to attempt to earn extra income from my projects. I love sewing things, but at a certain point, I run out of room to store my makes, I run out of people to gift them to, and I run out of supplies and need to buy more. By selling my items, I can continue making things while solving all of the above issues! At my husband’s encouragement, I finally registered myself as a business in June 2016, aimed at selling bags and other things I’ve sewn. I’m terrible at naming things, so the name came from the fact that my office/sewing room is painted a bright lime green color. How clever of me! Thankfully, I’m better at other creative pursuits outside of naming things.
My main sewing machine at the moment is my grandma’s old machine, a Bernina 1020 domestic machine. I also have a Babylock Evolution serger/coverstitch machine, but that doesn’t get a ton of use in my bag making projects. I primarily work with cottons, vinyls, and cork leather. I generally source my materials from local quilt shops and small online businesses based in the US and Canada.
